Changed days as Lang enjoy victory

Revamped side take three points

- Kenny Smith

Cambuslang Rangers boss John Doyle brought in an all-new defence on Saturday - and it paid dividends as they won their first game since Christmas.

The side were in the doldrums after having failed to win a single game in a run dating back to their previous win in December - but finished their season with a 4-2 win against bottom of the league Newmains.

John said: “We ended up with a new back three, with three new defenders playing.

“These were guys I’ve been trying to get in for a few weeks now, but because they play with amateur teams, they weren’t available to play for us, unfortunately.

“So I was really pleased when they said they were available to play on Saturday. They all came in, along with a new goalkeeper, and the four of them did very well.

“It gave us some freshness, which we really needed at the end of the season, and it’s just a shame I couldn’t have had them three or four weeks ago.

“We started the game well and went 2- 0 up in the first 15 minutes.

“After that, it started to get a bit scrappy and they pulled a goal back.

“We weren’t helped by the pitch, as it was very soft in some areas, but hard in others, even though it hadn’t rained all week.

“That made it very difficult for both teams, as you could never quite tell what the ball was going to do when you played it on the ground.

“The game became far more even-stevens.

“We got ourselves further in front with a nother couple of goals, and we finished the game much stronger.

“We looked comfortable, then right at the end, we switched off and they managed to get a goal back through their former Cambuslang Rangers forward, Chris Faulds. I thought he had played really well throughout the game and he deserved his goal.

“To be honest, I thought a 4-1 win would have been a fair reflection of the game, but I’m not going to grumble at a 4-2, given we hadn’t won since Christmas.”

With the side now having finished their league campaign, the players and manager are waiting until the club AGM takes place on May 4, when John’s fate will be decided.

He added: “It’s a bit of a strange time at Cambuslang Rangers just now.

“We’ve played all our games so our season is over, but no-one knows at present if they will be here or not next season.

“It’s all in the hands of the club members now, and they will decide whether I’m here or not.

“There was one thing that was pretty clear before kick off on Saturday from the guys - they wanted to go out and end the season with a win, because none of us know what’s going to happen next season.

“It’s a day when everyone pulled together, and we got the result we deserved - at long last.”
