Oscars-style awards for volunteers

- Will Henshaw

A group of volunteers from Rutherglen and Cambuslang were given a taste of the Oscars after being honoured for their hard work - Hollywood style

On Friday, June 5, volunteers from Health ‘n’ Happy Community Development Trust were recognised for their hard work with a plush ceremony called the Golden Star Awards.

The awards were based on the Oscars, with a red carpet laid outside the Aspire Building for the volunteers to enter the building, while dressed in their finery.

Healthy n’ Happy had been running a range of taster events throughout the first week of June showcasing the various volunteering opportunities on offer to local residents.

The charity also used this event to celebrate and thank the volunteers for all their hard work and dedication.

This culminated in the event on Friday which saw all the volunteers invited to an exclusive awards ceremony.

As the Healthy ‘n’ Happy volunteers exited the elevator they were greeted by a storm of paparazzi screaming their name, desperate to get an exclusive photo of the stars looking their best.

After escaping the barrage of photographers and autograph hunters the volunteers entered the CamGlen Radio studios where the event was broadcast live on air.

Cheers and applause greeted every volunteer as they collected their awards with a smile.

CamGlen Radio volunteer Amanda Hyndman said: “The awards ceremony was fab and the banter between the presenters, Tom and Tam was pretty ace.”

Healthy ‘n’ Happy project worker Tom Harten praised the event and highlighted its importance to volunteers but also the organisation.

“The event was brilliant, and really well attended,” he said. “It’s really important to have these events, these guys do so much for us so it’s nice to show how much we appreciate them. That’s primarily why we have these events but it’s also a great chance for volunteers across the organisation to interact, mingle and share their stories and roles with one another.”
