Full steam ahead for summer fun

- Douglas Dickie

Summer finally arrived at the weekend, and it was just in time to bathe the Newton Gala Day in warm sunshine.

Residents came out in force to enjoy the fun activities and stalls on offer. The ice-cream stall was a favourite for the kids, while the adults were able to cool off in the always popular beer tent.

The sun shone and residents came out in force at the Newton Gala day on Saturday ( June 27).

With summer finally arriving, the event proved one of the most successful in the gala’s history, with the stalls doing a roaring trade.

Kids were delighted to get up close with a number of animals at the petting zoo, while pony rides proved a popular attraction.

Entertainment came in the shape of June Fox dancers, Bushido Karate Club from Hallside School and Kirstie’s Zumba dancers.

There was also children’s rides and bouncy castle, tombola, burgers, brica-brac, a beer tent, face painters and glitter tattoos.

The event took place at the Newton Village Community Park and was organised by the Newton Residents Association.

Association chair, Margaret Heeps, said: “It was a really good day, the weather was brilliant. It was really quite warm, we couldn’t have asked for any more.

“The kids loved it. The event was meant to finish at 4pm but we still had people coming up at 3.30pm and 3.45pm.

“I was on the tombola stall all day so I didn’t actually get to see anything, our heads were down working the whole day.

“I seen the kids going down the slide and they enjoyed that, I think a few
