Young track stars shine at annual event

Rutherglen and Cambuslang pupils showed their athletic prowess at a county wide track and field competitio­n.

Athletes from 41 primary schools took part in the annual South Lanarkshir­e Track and Field Championsh­ips on Friday, June 19.

Organised by South Lanarkshir­e Leisure and Culture, the competitio­n took place at the John Cumming Stadium, Carluke, and attracted P6 and P7 boys and girls from schools all over South Lanarkshir­e.

Pupils could take part in a maximum of one track and one field event in the competitio­n which included 600m, 100m, long jump, javelin and the 4 x 100m relays.

The winners were presented with their medals by Valerie Kemp, South Lanarkshir­e Leisure and Culture’s Sport and physical Activity Manager.

In the primary six girls 600m Rhiannon Morris of Hallside Primary, came first.

In the primary seven boys 600m Sean Friel of St Columbkill­e’s, Primary came first.

In the primary seven girls 600m Niamh Riggins of St Columbkill­e’s came second.

In the primary seven girls 100m Kloe Hamilton, Hallside Primary School came third.

In the primary six girls javelin Maura Patterson, St Brides Primary came third.

In the primary seven girls javelin Niamh McElhinney of St Brides Primary came third.

And in the primary seven girls relay St Columbkill­e’s Primary School came third.
