Forced to play waiting game

Tough for gaffer Gus to muster squad

- Will Henshaw

Queen’s Park boss Gus MacPherson admits he has yet to assess his full squad so far during this pre-season.

There have been numerous players joining up and leaving the squad, and although preparations for next season are well under way, Gus has yet to get his full squad together.

The Spiders last pre-season game against Lowland League Broomhill Sports Club at Lesser Hampden on Saturday ended in a 3-1 defeat.

Gus said: “It’s been difficult to get the whole squad together as players are still on holiday and there’s work commitments so right now the friendlies are from a purely fitness point of view.

“But that’s to be expected at this level of the game and it’s just something you’ve got to deal with.”

The Hampden men will play Consett Town at Belle View Stadium in their next pre season game this Saturday (July 18) as part of their training camp in Durham.

However, Gus doesn’t expect to have the majority of his players back until they play Beith in a friendly on July 21.

He added: “There will still be a few on holiday, however we should have everyone back from the friendly against Beith. Then on the Saturday after that we’ve got our first competitive game against Edinburgh City in the Petrofac Cup. We’re looking to make a strong start and all of our players should be back for that one.”

Gus had been looking at the junior pair of Bellshill full back Max McKee and Clydebank attacker Ian Gold. He had asked the pair to remain for longer with the Spiders during their pre-season programme.

He said: “McKee picked up an injury and we decided that we wouldn’t be going ahead with that. Gold is still in and we’ll make a decision on him, I’d imagine later in the week.

“We will be making maybe two or three more signings. I’m fairly happy with our squad size at the moment, we’ve got enough so that competition for places will be strong, we’ve also been bringing in younger guys from the development squad for some of the pre season and they’ve been doing well.”
