MP’s backing for British steel industry
Rutherglen’s MP has called for more support for the British steel industry.
Margaret Ferrier MP backed the Charter for Sustainable British Steel at an event in Parliament last week.
The Charter calls for the use of high-quality, sustainable and traceable carbon steel rebar in UK construction projects.
The event was followed by a Westminster Hall Debate on the future of the British steel industry, where the Charter was praised by a selection of cross party MPs.
Recent years have seen a vast increase in steel imports. Alarmingly, unsustainably produced steel rebar now occupies a third of the market, with numbers only increasing. The Charter looks to boost responsibly sourced steel, which includes that produced on British soil.
The UK steel industry contributes billions to the UK economy each year and supports 20,000 jobs and Margaret is committed to championing this important sector.
Ms Ferrier said:“The steel industry is vital to our economy.
“This Charter for Sustainable British Steel will help safeguard jobs and protect the future of a vibrant industry that is also essential to the economy of my constituency.
“The potential for growth and further investment in the steel industry is enormous, and I call on organisations in both the public and private sector to sign the Charter and back sustainable steel.”
