CAMBUSLANG

In the Rutherglen District Bowling Association triples league, Cambuslang’s teams were home and away to Halfway BC on July 14. They won at home but lost the away game.

Yesterday (Tuesday), the club were at home and away to Burnside BC.

In the Cambuslang District Seniors Rinks League last Wednesday, Cambuslang had two rinks away against Kingswood BC, and narrowly lost both matches.

Today (Wednesday) the club’s games are at away against Overtoun Park BC, starting at 10.30am.

HALFWAY AND DISTRICT

A big congratulations to David Fergus who was part of the Lanarkshire South team that retained the Andrew Hamilton Trophy and became Scottish County Champions for the second year running.

They won overall by 126-106 shots against Wigtonshire and David’s rink won their game 22-19.

Last Saturday saw the balloted pairs (sponsored by Burtons Biscuits) take place and 32 players participated. Eventual winners were Flo Thomson and William Anderson who beat Gordon Shanks and Rena Duncan in the final. On Sunday the club hosted the Hoover Pairs and the Halfway pair of Hugh Gebbie and Alan Lorimer beat James McGaul and Tam Devenny in the final.

This Saturday sees the ladies charity rosebowl day take place with an 11.30am for noon start. The theme this year is a beach party and the chosen charity is Erskine. The club are hoping for a sunny day!

Next Saturday (August 1) sees the Tennents invitation triples take place. Any Halfway gents still to enter a team should do so before 7pm on Monday night.

There were contrasting fortunes for the two Lanarkshire League teams last Wednesday. The division three team were unlucky to come away from Larkhall without any points and will be involved in a relegation battle during the last three games. The division 10 team picked up another four points at home to Hamilton Caley and are battling it out for promotion. The next games take place on Friday, August 7, with division three at home to Dalserf, and division 10 away to Eddlewood.

The RDBA triples teams had two close games against Cambuslang last week. The home team won by a single shot and the away team lost by the same margin. Halfway are six points behind first place with 20 points still to play for over the next five weeks. This week’s opponents were Whitefield, next week’s are Templeton.

The district 26 seniors teams both went into Monday’s games with a small chance of winning their leagues. Both needed to get full points to have any chance but they only managed home wins against St Leonards and Hamilton. Well done to Ian Wray, Iain Firth, George Thomson and Charlie McIntyre (aided by a few substitutes) who went the full campaign undefeated.

KINGSWOOD

First up, it was the two bowl pairs of Joan Whitehill and Rachel Magee against Crookston at Kelvindale. This was a very close match and unfortunately Kingswood lost by two shots.

Even closer was the pairs against Hawkhead at Lilybank, but again Kingswood lost by one shot. Finally the fours played Dunblane at Shanks with Kingswood squaring the match on the final end, but again it was not to be with Dunblane gaining the vital shot at the extra end.

On Glasgow Fair Saturday, Kingswood held the annual mixed pairs competition and although there was a dreary start to the day the weather held up. Four section winners played a semi-final to identify the finalists.

In the first, Helen McGregor and John McNulty were convincing winners against Molly Sweeney and John Wood. It was a similar result in the other semi with Cathy Gemmell and Andy Boag getting the better of Josephine Jarvie and Brian Holland.

In the final Cathy Gemmell kept up her consistent standard of play and President Andy Boag resolved any problems created by Helen and John.

Cathy and Andy were deserved winners of the trophy which was presented by vice-president Billy Wheelans.

Finally, at Ardgowan BC, the BIWBC Junior Championships were held and although England won the series, Scotland was represented in both the singles and pairs finals.

The singles was a very close match with England winning by a shot, but in the pairs Kingwood’s very own Rachel Magee led for Stacey McDougall and they won a very close contest against Mervyn King’s step daughter Harriet Segasby and former World Indoor Singles winner Rebecca Field.

WHITEFIELD

Mark O’Hagan represented South Lanarkshire in the final of the Andrew Hamilton Trophy against Wigtonshire. South Lanarkshire retained the Scottish Counties they won last year and for the third time in five years.

The club would like to congratulate Mark and to the South Lanarkshire team on this magnificent achievement.

Back at the Whitefield, the trophy cabinet continues to fill up with silverware as David and Jim Hefferland skipped by Michael O’Hagan won the RDBA Jubilee Triples at Halfway and District Bowling Club.

The seniors gents had one draw and one loss in the Lanarkshire District 26 league against Udston and won both ties in the Cambuslang and District Seniors against Overtoun Park.

The Lanarkshire Leagues continued with three points secured by the division eight team against Bellshill. The division 18 team faltered somewhat by picking up only two points against Mount Vernon. It was a similar story as the triples team won at home but lost away to Kirkhill in the RDBA league.

On Saturday, the ladies hosted the invitation pairs with the weather thankfully holding up. In a Whitefield clean sweep, Georgie O’Hagan and Agnes Fitzpatrick triumphed on the day with Ruth Corrigan and Josie Gallagher securing a well-deserved second place. The ladies would like to thank the visiting teams for making it such an enjoyable event.

This weekend sees the gents club triples take place and members are reminded that this is a 9.30am for 10am start.

Finally, Bert Latkowski and Jim Molloy ran out winners in the Monday aggregate, 21 shots up.
