Fundraiser will help in refurbishment bid

- Jonathan Geddes

Fernhill and Cathkin parishoners are hoping to help refurbish part of their church.

And the members have organised a coffee morning this coming Saturday (March 19) to help raise funds for their appeal, which will see the session room in the Neilvaig Drive building overhauled.

The session room also doubles as the church’s creche, and members of the church are hoping that the planned improvements would provide a boost for the wee ones there.

Bridie Kelly, the creche co-ordinator at the church, said: “It’s really needing refurbished, really for the kids’ sake when it’s used as the creche.

“It needs to bring it up a bit to a better level of cleanliness.

”We’re wanting to put in new windows, flooring and new lights, which would help the whole room.”

Already one event has been held by church members, with a ladies night at Cambuslang Rugby Club proving a hit.

It earned £1,800, which should help cover work on the new windows, while they’re hoping to hold a fund- raising concert later in the year.

Now they’re hoping the coffee morning will prove successful this Saturday.

Bridie added: “There’ll be breakfast in the morning, then we’ll be serving lunches like soup, panninis and toasties as well as tea and coffee - with everything we do there’s always great home baking!

“As well as the home baking stalls, there will be raffles and jewellery for sale too.”

The coffee morning will have to go some way to match the success of their ladies night, which was a big hit.

“We were amazed at the amount raised, we didn’t expect that amount.

“We had so may donations, we played bingo and had raffles on the night, and all the prizes were donated, so the money raised all went towards the funds for the church.

“There was dancing as well, and the ladies were all up on their feet as it went -it was a very lively night!”

Bridie also praised the rest of the church’s creche workers for their hard work in starting the fundraising.

“It’s hard work but it’s well worth it - we’ve had good ladies helping out and making everything go as planned.

“The creche workers have all helped out and they’ve done really well so far. “

The coffee morning to raise funds for the session room/creche will take place in the church hall this Saturday, from 10am until 2pm.

Admission, which includes tea or coffee and cake will be £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. The lunches will be available at extra cost.
