Newton go a point clear at the top

-

Eastwood Park ..... 0 Newton Academ ... 3 After a good victory in the cup the previous week, Newton Academical were back in league action on Saturday afternoon against Eastwood Parkmount.

Newton started the game strongly and were able to get the ball down and play on a very poor grass park.

With 20 minutes played Newton received a free kick just outside the box and Paul McCabe was able to strike the ball into the top right hand corner.

When a corner was headed away by the Eastwood Parkmount defender it landed to Thomas Houston who was able to rifle home a volley to double Accies’lead before the interval.

Into the second half and Eastwood Parkmount came out with a point to prove and almost got back into the game when their striker missed from close range. They piled on the pressure and when their striker raced clear, he was knocked over in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

The Eastwood man then had a moment to forget as he blazed the penalty over the bar.

The visitors from Cambuslang struggled to carve out many chances in the second half but sealed the win late on. They caught Eastwood out with a quick counter attacking move which allowed Martin Jones to volley home his 14th goal of the season.

A moment of madness from striker Darren Hampson saw him red carded with just minutes remaining when he lashed out after receiving a late tackle.
