Local pool has a dirty record

Castlemilk baths shut 10 times in four years

- Jonathon Geddes

Castlemilk Pool has been named as the third dirtiest swimming baths in Glasgow over the past four years.

The unwanted status was revealed in figures released by Glasgow Life, in response to a freedom of information request made by the Reformer’s sister website, Glasgow Live.

They showed that Castlemilk had been closed 10 times over the last four years due to poo in the water.

It’s in contrast to South Lanarkshire Leisure Eastfield in Rutherglen, which the Reformer revealed earlier this year has only had to close twice over the past four years because of “faecal contamination” in the water

Glasgow Life, who run all of the city’s leisure centres, say that pools are thoroughly cleaned and cleansed following any accidents.

A Glasgow Life spokesman said: “Incidents can be caused by a variety of reasons and in many cases it is as a result of medical conditions experienced by customers.

“The cleanliness of our pools and the health and safety of customers is our number one priority and all pools are cleaned to the strictest of guidelines immediately after any incidents.

“Again, timescales for such closures can vary but usually only last a few hours until recycling of water takes place within stringent guidelines.”

The figures regarding South Lanarkshire were revealed in March this year, and prompted calls for parents to take more responsibilty for their kids in the water.

South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) advise all parents of young children who are not potty trained to wear swim nappies.

They also advise not swimming for at least 48 hours after vomiting or diarrhoea, and ideally not for 14 days.

SLLC also suggest encouraging young swimmers to use the toilets before, and ensure they leave the pool to use the toilet before it is too late; using the showers before entering; if you start to feel unwell, leave the water, and if you do have an accident, please let the lifeguards know immediately.

The Glasgow table of shame was topped by the Gorbals, which has been closed 14 times in the four year period with Springburn second in the table with 11 closures.

The latest figures related to Glasgow revealed that all the city’s swimming pools had been closed 60 times in total over the four year span.
