Core courses opening up new skills set

- Edel Kenealy

People are being given an opportunity to learn a host of new skills in a programme being rolled out at locations across Rutherglen and Cambuslang.

The Core programme hosts a series of workshops during term time when people can learn things such as jewellery making, knitting and sewing, and take part in cookery demonstrations, IT workshops and photography sessions.

Additional workshops covering issues such as cultural awareness and holistic therapies are also scheduled for the autumn and will see guest speakers cover a range of topics.

Staff will also be on hand to support people looking to volunteer and gain new skills for employment.

The core programme takes place weekly on Wednesdays, between 10am and 2pm at Universal Connections building, 1 Burnhill Street, Rutherglen.

Recommencing on September 7, the programme also hosts a crèche at the centre, and light snacks and refreshments will be available. An outreach version of the Core will also be held monthly in Springhall and Cambuslang.

It will be held at Springhall Community Centre, 30 Cruachan Road, Rutherglen, on the first Thursday of the month between 9am and midday, and Toll Pitch Pavilion, Hamilton Road, Cambuslang, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm every first Monday of the month.
