Rutherglen Reformer

Roadworks given a mixed reaction

Work needed but it’s still disruptive

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen residents were having a case of road rage in last week’s Reformer over the amount of roadworks in the area.

The likes of Woodside Avenue, Fernhill Road and Dukes Road have all been closed at various times in recent months.

We went out to Burnside to find out if locals there had been affected.

Carol Hutchison, from Burnside said: “It is irritating I suppose, but at the same time they are trying to improve things for us, so we can’t complain too much. “It’s a necessary evil as it needs done.” Ewan Bruce, from Rutherglen, said: “I’m aware of it and we’ve had to take a few detours to get around it all, but it’s not been that bad – I’ve survived. There’s the one at Richmond Place, near Lidl, and I kept getting caught every morning because I’d forget about it.

“It’s always difficult when you have to shut down roads but maybe it was an issue doing so many at once.”

David White, from Burnside, said: “It feels like everywhere you go or turn there’s a diversion at the moment. They seem to be doing them all at once, and on every weekend. It’s very frustrating being a driver.”

Donna Rae said: “Thankfully it’s not affected me too much because I don’t use Dukes Road, but my friend stays there so I know it’s been a hassle for them. It does seem like everywhere you go there’s a road closure, but I’m just lucky it’s not affected me!”
