Taylor and RLTC up for top awards

-

A Cambuslang figure skater has been nominated in the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards.

Taylor McLeod has proven her dedication to the sport by competing for Team GB and securing a sponsorship deal at just 12 years of age.

The Stonelaw High School pupil, who has been nominated for the Local Hero award, is part of the East Kilbride Ice Figure Skating Club and has appeared at two international events in Hungary and Slovakia.

Taylor is now sponsored by manufacturing company, Love Ice Skating, but her rise to the top has not been easy.

Her parents have previously spoken of their devotion to help Taylor achieve her dreams by travelling to training bases and competitions up and down the UK.

Due to the closure of Taylor’s local ice-rink in East Kilbride, the youngster’s parents travel hundreds of miles a week to get her to training in Dundee, Kilmarnock and Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club has been nominated for the Local Club award after a phenomenal season with many members winning championships and gaining promotions.

The team has not only shown great determination on the courts but off it too after becoming the first people to play tennis at the peak of Britain’s tallest mountains.

Coaches Jonny Willcox, Cedric Decuyper, Jake Jacob and club president Gareth Ellor completed the three peaks challenge earlier this year by climbing to the top of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis within 24 hours.

Dubbed Expedition Mountennis, the challenge is a highlight of the tennis club’s Return To Splendour campaign, which aims to save the derelict tennis courts at Burnside Bowling Club in the town.

Planning permission from South Lanarkshire Council has been granted to transform the derelict courts and make them a hub of the community.

The plans approved was for the building of a clubhouse, replacement of fencing and floodlighting, provision of a raised spectator viewing area and landscaping and associated works.

RLTC hope to raise £220,000 for the project that will see their club operate two sites in the town.
