Around the greens: Whitefield and Halfway

-

On Saturday, October 8, Whitefield hosted the final tournament of the season, the Mixed Balloted Triples, jointly sponsored by Hefferland Catering and Birrell Corrance, Funeral Directors.

This was an additional tournament to the schedule with Helen Flannigan, David Hefferland and Michael O’Hagan winning the final against Muriel Doyle, Martin McIlree and David Russell.

And as the sun sets on another bowling season, it is fitting to reflect on what has been a remarkable year on the green for the club. Success has come at county and national levels for a number of players. Claire Walker was the runner-up at the national championships at ladies under 25 level and continues to represent the national team as captain of the ladies juniors.

Mark O’Hagan also reached the national championships in the Gents under-25s and was joined by Whitefield’s gents triples of Andy Stewart, Michael O’Hagan and Michael Docherty.

At County level, Mark Law, Alasdair Paton Junior and Michael Docherty won the Lanarkshire Bowling Association Triples.

Success also followed for the club’s Lanarkshire League Division 8 team who are promoted after winning their title.

While bowling remains the club’s main focus, it is also worth noting that their annual President’s Charity Day raised £4,200 for Rutherglen Community Carers in recognition of their work with dementia sufferers. Halfway and District thanked all who participated in this year’s charity coffee morning that was held on Friday, September 23. An amazing total of around £3,500 was raised and will be divided equally between MacMillan Cancer and The Beatson.

A big thanks goes to the following businesses who provided prizes: Dr Gormans, Blue Rupee, Farmfoods, Marion’s Flowers, Sam’s Dragon, Equi’s, Spices, Mark Wright Foundation, Jasmine House, Indian Fusion, The Tudor, Peking Palace, Slaters, Head Room Only, Indiana Dome, Fratelli’s, Tunnocks, Shanghai Delight, Inner Peace, Z Cars, Cinnamon Club, Celtic FC, A1 Wok, Curleys Butchers, Pandora’s Box, Tennents, Newton Arms, Birrell Corrance Funeral Directors, Gary and John McPike, Wm Morrisons, Forsyth Glazing, Speciality Cakes, Ambience, and Finlays.

As well as the weekly Saturday night live music entertainment (non members are welcome), there will be a disco / karaoke this Sunday at 5pm and a presentation of prizes will take place on Saturday, November 5 at 7pm.

A sheet is also in the clubhouse for anyone who wishes to buy tickets for the clubs Hogmanay Hootenany and the sheet for the kids Christmas party, Sunday, December 18, will also be going up in the clubhouse.
