Chair Taylor steps down after 30 years

- Edel Kenealy

A Cambuslang man who has served his community for 30 years has stood down from his role as chairman of the town’s community council.

John Taylor, who has been chairman for the past two years, said that he had decided to stand down on health grounds.

He said: “It has been an honour to chair the community council, and I wish members all the best for the future.”

John joined the community council when it was first established and continued to participate since then, with some small gaps in service.

He has also served as an office bearer of Create and continued his involvement when Create was one of the organisations incorporated into VASLAN.

His contribution to the community was recognised with a Community Service Award from South Lanarkshire Council in 2009.

The community council expressed their thanks and appreciation to John for his many years of valued service and wished him well for the future.

Hamish B. Allan, secretary of Cambuslang Community Council, said the organisation would mark John’s work with a celebratory dinner next month.

He said: “Over the years during which we have both been office bearers, I have enjoyed working with John Taylor. At times when the community council found it difficult to attract office bearers his continued chairmanship, and later return as chairman, ensured it was able to continue.

“I extend my personal thanks and wish him every success and happiness in the future.”

Following John’s resignation, vice chairman David Thomson was nominated and elected as chairman. Michelle Farmer was elected as vice chairwoman. Hamish B. Allan was re-elected as secretary and John Bachtler was re-elected as treasurer.
