Enjoy healthy winter feasts

- Fiona Pediani

It is that time of year when the nights are getting darker, the temperature is dropping and most of us just want to get back to the warm comfort of our own homes at the end of a busy day.

The food that we eat at this time of year also tends to be more of the “comfort food” type.

Soups, stews, casseroles, curries and pasta dishes can be packed with nutrition and not as unhealthy a choice as many people think. Just by using the minimum of oil and sticking to tomato-based sauces, a calorie-laden meal can become a satisfying, healthy option.

A tin of chopped tomatoes is a musthave staple in your kitchen cupboard and with a variety of herbs and spices your meal options can be endless.

Low-fat soft cheeses, which come in a variety of different flavours, make a great base for a pasta sauce.

With all the labour-saving devices that many homes have these days, it can be quick and easy to serve up a comforting, nutritious meal in no time at all.

A soup maker can make a great soup in 20 minutes, an airfryer can make healthy chips, roast potatoes and roasted vegetables with minimum preparation and a slow cooker can have a meal ready and waiting to be served up the minute you walk through your front door.

If you have a bit more time then a traditional pot or casserole dish can do the job just as well and make a delicious one-pot meal for the whole family to enjoy.

The latest Weight Watchers magazine is full of recipes and food ideas which will give you the feelgood factor over the winter months.
