Cambus walkers get to route of mystery

- Jonathan Geddes

Cambuslang Parish Church’s walking group enjoyed their annual mystery walk.

Each of the group chose a slip from a hat and each slip had a different destination on it, although only one was the right one.

A convoy of four cars left the church, heading up Greenlees Road, and at the top of the road the car turned left, meaning that the unfortunate chap who had drawn Cathkin Braes knew instantly that he had lost.

A similar story befell others as the cars passed Stewartfield Heritage Loch and the Farm Museum.

At the Queensway Flyover roundabout the cars turned left and those who knew that the destinations they had drawn were straight on or to the right saw their hopes of the prize dashed.

After travelling along the Queensway the convoy turned into Calderglen and the start of the day’s walk was finally revealed.

It was a fine autumn day when the walkers set off, with millions of leaves underfoot and beautiful autumn colours still on the trees.

For over two miles the route followed the course of the River Calder before turning right and then left on to a boardwalk over a marshy, boggy area which is a paradise for bird watchers.

Halfway along the boardwalk the group was saddened to see a 50 metre gap in the boardwalk, with a notice saying that this was due to vandalism.

Undeterred the group walked through the boggy ground and rejoined the boardwalk, thankful that there had been very little rain for some time.

After passing through a wooded area the route took the party along a few miles of country roads, through the village of Auldhouse then back round in a circle to the same wooded area they had already passed through.

A lunch break was taken at a picnic area but again the vandals had been at work and sadly there were no picnic tables.

From there the route recrossed the boardwalk then turned back towards Calderglen Visitor Centre.

It had been a great walk in bright sunshine and everyone had enjoyed it. However, the day was not yet over as after a shower and a change of clothes the next stop was the group’s annual dinner.

This years it was held at Cambuslang Bowling Club and the group are very grateful for the use of the premises.

The dinner was excellent and afterwards various prizes and awards were presented.

The mystery destination prize went to Mhairi Mukherji, the style award was presented to Norrie McNamee and the leader of the year was Margaret Macfarlane.

The evening was rounded off with a name that tune quiz and a few songs from local folk group Piggery Brae.
