Bully Wee avoid Berwick scare

Clyde lose two-goal lead but edge win

-

Barry Ferguson admitted he didn’t lose faith in his side after watching Clyde win the hard way.

Goals from Peter MacDonald and David Gormley had the Bully Wee on easy street before Greg Rutherford and Greg Hurst levelled things up.

However, Berwick were reduced to 10 men after Darren Lavery’s dismissal and the home side cashed in with Chris Smith netting the clincher.

Bully Wee boss Ferguson said: “As a group, they know what I think of them. I have a lot of good players.

“We were in total control. It’s frustrating but when it went to two-each I always knew we’d come back. A lot of teams would have thrown the towel in.

“We need to cut out the silly mistakes. If we do that then we win easily.

“I’m happy we got the three points but the game should have been out of sight.”

Following last week’s disappointing defeat at Arbroath, Barry Ferguson made two changes to the starting line-up with Ross Perry and Darren Miller coming in for Martin McNiff and Chris Smith.

The visitors had been under pressure for most of the opening stages of the game, but almost scored with their first real attack. A low cross from the right went through several players and eventually fell to Greg Hurst at the back post, but John Gibson did well to scramble across his line and keep the shot out.

Clyde took the lead in 23 minutes when MacDonald beautifully lifted a free-kick on the edge of the box over the wall and into the net with keeper Kevin Walker rooted to the spot.

The lead was doubled early in the second half when Gormley curled a loose ball into the far corner.

However, two goals in the space of four minutes turned the match on its head as Berwick fought back.

Rutherford converted from Jordyn Sheerin’s cross in 58 minutes with Hurst then slamming home after poor Clyde defending.

Lavery saw red after a poor challenge on Scott Ferguson and Clyde punished the 10 men when Smith headed home Darren Miller’s corner.

Berwick boss John Coughlin said: “We didn’t turn up in the first half but we take a lot of confidence from our second-half performance.”

The Bully Wee will now turn their attention to this weekend’s William Hill Scottish Cup third round tie.

Arbroath are the visitors to Broadwood on Saturday in what looks to be an entertaining all-League Two clash.

The Red Lichties may sit two points behind Ferguson’s men in the table but will take confidence from their recent 4-0 victory over Clyde two weeks ago.
