Mistakes cost Glens dearly

Yoker defeat leaves Glens hovering above trap

- Murray Spooner

Willie Harvey insists his side must cut out the errors if they are to make an attempt of breaking into the top half of the Super First Division.

A handful of mistakes cost Glencairn the chance to climb the league table and left them hovering above the relegation zone.

The Glens found themselves 2-0 down at half- time to Yoker having gifted the hosts their rewards.

Jay McKay pulled his team back into the game and looked to have kickstarted a valiant comeback.

But a controversial incident involving Alan Muir’s wedding ring, led to Yoker’s third goal which quashed any hope of the visitors stealing a point.

Paddy Cullen grabbed a consolation but the damage had already been done.

Harvey explained: “It was the same old same old with missed chances and losing poor goals.

“The first goal was horrendous to give away. There was a man in midfield standing on his own and nobody picked him up and he’s taken a strike from 20 yards. It was very poor defending, not just from the defenders but in midfield too.

“The second was bad as well. It was a pass back from Rhys Donaldson. It was short but we felt the player was offside when he struck it. But credit to them, they came out the traps in the second half and Jay got his shot away.

“We then started to mount a bit of pressure but lost the next goal. Alan had to go off the park to take his ring off and wasn’t allowed back on the park till play had restarted. It was a poor goal to concede from a corner kick but Alan wouldn’t have been marking the boy who scored.

“We responded well again and got another goal back and created chances at the end.”

In recent weeks Harvey has often said his side should be challenging at the top of the league but missed opportunities in front of goal have been their downfall.

They now find themselves in the bottom half with just 10 points from 10 games.

Maryhill are The Glens next hurdle in what the manager reckons could be an important match for both sides.

“I would like to think we were capable of beating them but I would like to think we were capable of beating anyone,” he said.

“I know they’ve changed their manager and they’re down the bottom end beside us so it is a sort of bottom of the league battle.

“But you can see with Yoker, they won on Saturday and jumped up three places – that could have been us.

“It’s annoying that we are still losing games. We need to cut out the errors.

“It was pointed out to me at the end of the game that we are actually one point better off than we were this time last season. But that doesn’t encourage me because we should be up there challenging. ”
