Sandro scores in comeback match

McColl hails striker for recovery from injury

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers manager Paul McColl hailed his striker Alessandro Savarese, who came off the bench to score his first league goal since suffering a horrific injury.

The 22- year- old had made a promising start to his Lang career before he broke his ankle during a Sectional League Cup tie in August.

But the forward’s rapid recovery meant he was able to etch his name on to Saturday’s scoresheet after entering the field of play with 10 minutes remaining in the 4-0 win over Vale of Clyde.

His teammate Dale Simeon,, who also signed for The Lang from Tower Hearts under-21s, netted a double before midfielder Jamie Hay struck home a superbly hit free kick.

Savarese sealed the win late on to hand Cambuslang their ninth league victory this season.

The gaffer said: “It’s great to have him back. He’s still got a bit to go but it was good to give him 10 minutes or so.

“He can be a real pest on the park for defenders and he annoys the living daylights out of them because he just keeps going at them.

“We’ve now got five top boys who can play up front and some of them can play on the wing.

“Three of them are similar to Sandro but Bob Davidson is different. He holds the ball up, which gives a good balance going forward.

“Dale Simeon is another one who can play up top. He’s been playing up there the past few matches and got four goals in two games.

“He can also play in midfield but I see him as more of a striker.”

The Lang have now gone on a sixgame winning run since they were knocked out of the Scottish Junior and West of Scotland Cups last month.

McColl admitted Fullarton Park was a difficult place to go but is pleased to have picked up maximum points there.

He said: “Saturday was probably a fair result. We played well but we’ve played better.

“The park didn’t really suit us but it’s going to be like that from now on with the bad weather.

“We’re just glad the game was on and that’s the main thing.

“It was a decent performance and both teams had some chances.”

McColl’s men entertain Neilston on Saturday while their nearest title challengers St Roch’s play away to struggling Forth Wanderers.

Co-managers Martin Campbell and John Paul Dow’s side have failed to win a league match since September 10 and were narrowly knocked out of the Scottish Junior Cup by East Premier League outfit Haddington last weekend.

McColl, however, is ignoring their opponents’ poor run of games and believes it will be a difficult match as he knows very little about The Farmer’s Boys.

He said: “It will be a tough game. From what I have been told they are a big, physical team but it’s one of those games where they can change their team on the day.

“They’ve had some not bad results lately, won the first three league games and then haven’t won any since so it’s difficult because you have no idea what to expect.

“But we hope to keep the winning run going and not get carried away.”
