Super subs seal Rovers win

-

Rutherglen Rovers have made it through to the third round of the Health Rewards Cup with a 3-0 win away to Glasgow Athletic.

The Royal Burgh side started the game well but failed to execute the many chances they created.

At the other end however, the visitors managed to keep out The Latics’ potent threats.

Rovers hit the post from close range and goalkeeper Brian Welsh was called into action to make a few terrific saves.

But despite going into the break disappointed, they finally took the lead in the second half on 60 minutes.

After a series of corners Mark MacDonald headed home.

The goal seemed to give Rovers confidence as they started to control the match.

Rutherglen’s managerial team of Frank Brady and his brother Raymond brought last season’s top scorer Paul Skivington and new signing Joe Hinshelwood off the bench. And it didn’t take them long to make an impact when Skivington scored the second on 75 minutes while Hinshelwood knocked in the third for his debut strike.

Rovers’ next match is at home to Rosehill Thistle in Division 1 of the Sunday Central AFL.
