Rutherglen Reformer

Viki’s challenge is 200 obstacles over 20 miles

Building up stamina

- Andy McGilvray

A Rutherglen woman is preparing for a gruelling race that will see her tackle 200 obstacles over 20 miles.

Viki Emmott and her former physical trainer Martin Hutton, 39, will take on the Rat Race Dirty Weekend at Burghley House in Peterborough on Saturday, May 6, to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

The 32- year- old got to know Martin through physical training sessions and the pair often went running together before they struck up a friendship.

‘ Guerilla Coach’ Martin, a fitness trainer at Scottish Rowing Council’s Fitness Centre in Strathclyde Park, and author of ‘Transform Your Body: 12 Weeks to a New You’, said: “We’ve never done it before, we have done other races of that type, like Tough Mudder, but this is the big one and we thought it would give us something to train towards, and raise some money for charity at the same time.”

Martin says they will need to undergo some gruelling training, but aim to shave 30 minutes off the average time for the race.

He added: “Vicki is a friend and she used to be a client. She came to me because she felt that she wasn’t very fit, but she ended up doing a 5k and has done really well and built it up.

“We need to get out and do a lot of running, need to build up stamina for distance, and we use ropes and kettlebells and things like that, because we need to work outdoors and build up our strength. We need to build up on endurance, distance and strength, because it’s going to involve a lot of high walls, swimming, monkey bars and things like that. The average is five-and-a-half hours, so we’re aiming to get it under five hours.”
