EQUITY FUND

- Douglas Dickie

Schools in Rutherglen and Cambuslang will benefit from a £1.7m funding boost as part of the Scottish Government’s drive to improve standards in schools.

The share each school is due to receive from the Scottish Government’s new £120 million pupil equity fund has been revealed by deputy first minister John Swinney.

All 18 primaries, three mainstream secondaries and one assisted special needs school will receive a share of the fund.

The area’s primary school will receive £1,305,600 while the three secondaries plus Rutherglen High receive £397,200

Clare Haughey MSP welcomed the news, saying: “Every child in Scotland should have the best possible start in life, and it is unacceptable for children from the poorest backgrounds to have their chances limited by circumstances outside their control.

“The SNP in government has made closing the poverty- related attainment gap our number one priority, and our new £120 million pupil equity fund is aimed at doing just that.

“This new announcement will let parents, teachers and school leaders in South Lanarkshire see how much funding they can expect to drive up standards and tackle the inter-generational cycle of deprivation in their school.”

Tony McDaid, executive director of education resources at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “We welcome the additional funding to support schools to close the poverty- related attainment gap. South Lanarkshire Council is working closely with our schools to ensure that pupils gain maximum benefit from the funding.” The schools will receive as follows: Bankhead - £97,200 Burgh - £102,000 Burnside - £26,400 Cairns - £130,800 Calderwood - £55,200 Cathkin Primary - £112,800
