Call for action on town’s danger road

Call for improvements

- Douglas Dickie

A call for traffic calming measures on a notorious road have been made by a Cambuslang council candidate.

Dr Norman Rae, who is standing in Cambuslang West for the Lib Dems, says action on Greenlees Road was “long overdue”.

He said the road was not designed for the volume of traffic it now takes.

Residents have long called for changes to Greenlees Road, with statistics suggesting drivers regularly flout the speed limit.

Dr Rae, who has had 125 responses to a survey about the road, said: “The real black spots are the staggered junction with Brownside Road and Vicarland Road and the top exit on to East Kilbride Road. The council have allowed new estates with hundreds of houses to be built in the area without reviewing the traffic arrangements in the area – and there are more to come.

“The problems on Greenlees Road are also spreading to other roads as drivers attempt to get to Greenlees Road or avoid it.

“I am in no doubt that we need a full review of Greenlees Road.”

Head of South Lanarkshire Council’s roads and transportation services, Gordon Mackay, said: “We are aware of the issues raised by Mr Rae with regard to Greenlees Road.

“Planning consent has been granted for new housing in the area and some works are already proposed as a result, such as the reduction in speed limit on Greenlees Road and East Kilbride Road as well as new traffic signals at East Kilbride Road/Greenlees Road.

“In addition, other planning applications have been submitted to the council and these are supported by transport assessments. As a consequence, further off-site works are currently being considered.”
