Winning run ends at home

- Peter Ferguson

Glencairn’s four-month unbeaten run came to an end as Shettleston went back to the top of the league table with a late winning goal.

Glens had plenty of chances early on. The best fell to McKay who dribbled round Whyte, but the angle was too tight for him to score and Ross Dickson got back to clear.

Hutchison twice denied Fry, once from a set piece and again with his legs.

Shettleston thought they had taken the lead when Ricky McIntosh bundled the ball into the net from close range, but he was denied by the assistant referee’s offside flag.

The second-half was an end-to-end affair. In the 53rd minute Hutchison made an excellent save to deny Welsh, and Fraser headed his attempted clearance against his own post. Just before the hour mark Whyte produced a stunning save to keep the scoreline blank. McKay set up Hamilton whose shot was deflected, but somehow Whyte managed to get a hand to the ball

Whyte then made a double save to deny Fraser and then McNab.

McNab then headed over the bar from right in front of goal before seeing his shot blocked by Whyte.

Despite being the better team, it was Glens who conceded in the 82nd minute. The ball broke through the defence, and Kieran O’Hear won the race to slip the ball past Hutchison.

Rutherglen Glencairn: Hutchison, McGregor, Docherty (Neil), Donaldson, Fraser, McGuire (Trialist), Hall, Hamilton, McNab, McArdle, McKay (Team).
