Barcelona trip joy

- Jonathan Geddes

A local charity have ensured it will be a Spanish sojourn for a competition winner after giving away a trip to Barcelona.

Classrooms For Malawi are based on Kirkwood Street, and believe that education is the most sustainable route out of poverty.

Working in Scotland and Malawi with volunteers, schools, businesses, community groups, local authorities and other charities, Classrooms for Malawi have built and renovated over 136 classrooms since the charity was started in 2012.

They recently held a charity draw, giving away two nights in Barcelona for two people, as a way of promoting their upcoming grand ball, which will feature a host of similar prizes up for grabs.

Local MSP Clare Haughey was on hand to draw the winner, which went to Alana Ray, a primary school teacher. She said: “I recently heard about Classrooms for Malawi through a friend.

“I ‘liked’ the organisation on Facebook so that I could keep up to date with any events and fundraisers that I could get involved in.

“I never expected to win the Barcelona stay.

“It was welcome surprise when I got a call from the Classrooms for Malawi team.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have won – Barcelona is one of my favourite cities – I can’t wait to go!”

Last year over 600 people attended the ball and over £30,000 was raised.

This year’s event will take place on May 6.

There will be live entertainment, raffles, silent auctions, some delicious food and a champagne reception on the night.
