Church building to become a nursery

Deal set to be concluded

- Jonathan Geddes

Cambuslang Parish Church’s Kirkhill building is set to be turned into a nursery.

The High Flyers nursery are preparing to take over the site of the former Cambuslang Old Parish Church, with the deal expected to be concluded by the end of May.

It concludes a longrunning saga of what to do with the building, going back to when the Old Parish, Trinity St Paul’s and St Andrew’s churches merged to create Cambuslang Parish Church in 2008.

Cambuslang minister Rev Leslie Milton said: “Members of the church congregation and people in the wider community know that we have been in negotiations with a prospective purchaser for some time, and we can now announce that we are close to the completion of a sale.

“It is a sadness to us that the church building which is such an important part of Cambuslang’s heritage and the church’s history of faith in our town has ceased to be a place of worship.

“The Kirk Session was clear when the building was put on the market that their preference was for it to continue to benefit our community.

“We are glad that the purchasers, the High Flyers, who are already based in the Kirkhill Church halls during the day, will be offering child care facilities, and be a vital community resource to many families in our area.

“We wish them well in the development of their business.

“Important objects for our heritage, including the war memorials, will be removed from the church and displayed appropriately.

“The sale has been delayed by the time it takes such a project to get through the various stages of planning.

“All the necessary work has now been done, and arrangements are in place to conclude a sale by the end of May.”

The High Flyers application to the council’s planning department proposed making internal alterations to the existing church building to form a nursery, incorporating the formation of an external play area, new vehicular access and a car park.

In August 2014 Cambuslang Parish Church voted for the building to be put to an alternative use in the community.

The building was then placed on the open market to gauge interest in a cash sale.

We wish them well in their business
