Pupils enjoy triathlon experience
Hundreds of school pupils enjoyed swimming, cycling and running in the very first Cambuslang and Rutherglen primary schools triathlon event.
More than 200 keen young sportsmen and women took part in the Landemer Tri-fest at the Eastfield Leisure Centre and Quarryfield Park on Wednesday, June 7.
The event, hosted by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Sports Development, was noncompetitive and students were able to perform at their leisure through the course.
Fun additional activities were on offer to the pupils after they completed their challenge.
Supported by over 40 volunteers from Active Schools, University of West of Scotland, and City of Glasgow College, all worked extremely hard on the day to ensure the safe running of the event.
Landemer Day secretary, Ian Duncan, commented on the valuable experience from all of the partners in the team who brought together an excellent day of sport and fun.
“These youngsters had a fun day that they’d never experienced before and would love to do so again,”he said.“So with this in mind, the Landemer committee is looking forward to assisting in the planning of next year’s tri-fest.”
The Landemer Tri-fest event was coordinated in conjunction with the previous Saturday’s Landemer Day Gala event to promote community sport and participation.
It was also an opportunity for South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Sports Development to showcase the exciting sport of triathlon and enable local partners to come together to plan an event that would promote physical activity.
Each pupil that participated and completed the course was awarded with a participation medal, t-shirt and draw-string bag.
South Lanarkshire Active Schools manager Karen McInally said:“It was great to see so many young people participating in the first tri-fest at Lifestyles Eastfield and Quarryfield Park.
“This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our fantastic volunteers and local partners. We hope the experience of the event encourages the young people to try out new activities in their area and continue to participate in sport.”
