LANG SWINGS INTO ACTION ON 125TH

Hickory clubs and plus fours help mark the milestone

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Golf Club has had a very busy few weeks as their 125th anniversary celebrations got under way.

The festivities got off to a fun start with the nine-hole string competition, which was won by captain Jim Stevenson, Arthur Reid and Michael Logan.

Competitors were given a length of string corresponding to their handicaps and were able to use this anywhere on the course to move a ball from behind a tree or put the ball in the hole until the string was all used up.

The main anniversary event was the Hickory Golf challenge where members took a step back in time to play a Texas scramble with a difference.

All members used Hickory clubs to celebrate the beginnings of golf.

The day culminated with a win for Stuart Geddes, Janice Davidson and Jim Leighton who were closely followed by the second-place team of Colin Kerr, Ann Hay, Peter Barclay and Davie McKay.

Cambuslang Golf Club member Neil David said: “A great day was had by all and the clubhouse was full of vibrancy and a lot of period-style dress to add to the occasion.

“A big thanks must go to Hickory Golf North who provided the clubs for the event.”

They week before, members took part in the annual George and Christian Reid Trophy.

This competition was eventually won by Linda McVittie and Fraser Russell, followed by Joyce Dickson and Ian Skillen in second place.

In the June monthly medal there were some impressive scores in both divisions.

First class was won by Phil Tully with a net 67 followed by Shaun Philbin and Alan Wilson both with 68s.

Second class was won by Alex McLaughlin who scored a net 66 while second place went to Gary Campbell with 67 and Liam Browne with 69.

Events coming up include the ninehole three-club challenge and the annual Gorman Cup for those with a handicap of 13 or above. ●For more news and handy tips for your game, visit the club’s Facebook page.
