On their bikes for baton relay
Camglen Bike Town came face to face with a Commonwealth cyclist when they welcomed the Queen’s Baton Relay last week.
The baton travelled through Cuningar Loop, with hundreds turning out to enjoy the sight.
Six members of Bike Town were involved in taking the baton through the park on their bikes and they were joined by Rab Wardell, who will be hoping to grab gold at the Gold Coast next year. They then handed the baton over to another cyclist, Paralympic athlete Louise Haston.
Jim Ewing of Bike Town said it was a real thrill to ride alongside Rab but he joked: “He can do a few stunts I might not try.”
Jim added: “It was a lovely day for the participants, who all said it was a unique experience, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“All our group got a chance to hold the baton. “It was a great community event.” Clare Haughey MSP was also there to enjoy the day and she was joined by South Lanarkshire Provost Ian McAllan.
The event was run by Clyde Gateway and Lord Smith of Kelvin, chair of the regeneration company, was also there.
He said: “The Queen’s Baton Relay provided us with a great opportunity to showcase some of the best legacy aspects of the 2014 Games, including the new Cuningar Woodland Park.
“It was an honour to be asked to carry the baton from the athletes’ village over the new bridge from Glasgow into South Lanarkshire and to be able to hand it over to Provost McAllan.
“Clyde Gateway is, rightly, proud of its work with local community groups and organisations and I was therefore delighted that members of the Bike Town initiative from the Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust could be part of the baton relay.
“It all helped make it a day to remember.”
