Warning to beware of scammers saying they’re from the HMRC

-

Lanarkshire police officers are warning residents in Rutherglen and Cambuslang to be on their guard against a telephone scam.

It involves victims being contacted by fraudsters who are claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

There have been a number of incidents reported recently across the region where victims have been asked to pay non-existent tax debts using iTunes gift cards.

The scammers do not need the actual cards to redeem the value, but get victims to read out the serial codes contained on the back over the phone.

Contact is made via phone calls, text messages and automated voice messages.

Sergeant Susan Rae said:“These fraudsters are targeting elderly people in particular.

“This, once again, highlights that there are criminals out there who will take advantage of anyone and use any means, no matter what, to commit crime.

“I would urge people to ensure that they pass on details of this scam to relatives, friends or neighbours who could be potential victims.

“HMRC will never ask for any money owed in the form of gift vouchers. They will write to you officially regarding any genuine issues.

“Our advice is to be aware of this scam and end any suspicious cold calls you receive, then report it to Police Scotland.”

Sergeant Rae concluded:“Any victims of such a crime, or anyone with any concerns of this nature can contact their local police office via 101.”
