Old records hit the right note with music lovers

What songs did you love in your youth?

- Jonathan Geddes

Vinyl records are making a comeback.

Once thought dead and buried, the format has resurfaced, with figures showing that sales are at a 25-year high, despite the onset of streaming services and downloads.

Now one entrepreneur is even offering fans the chance to be remembered on vinyl after they’re gone, by creating special memorial records that include clips of the person speaking and their favourite songs.

With vinyl’s popularity rising again, we went out to Rutherglen Main Street to ask shoppers what the first record they bought was.

Lynn Malloy said: “I got Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. They were really popular at the time and I still like the song, although I don’t know where the old record is!

I had the Kinks and Tired of Waiting For You. I was 14 and starstruck by them” Robert Simpson

That’s gone by the wayside.”

Wilma Jackson said: “I can’t remember which song, but it was one of the singles by Gerry and the Pacemakers. I was of that era where there was the Beatles and the Stones and the Pacemakers and I enjoyed all the rock n’ roll.”

Angie Williams said: “It was Madonna and Like A Virgin. I was a big fan of her growing up. I’m not that into music these days but I don’t mind still listening to the odd Madonna song now and again.”

Robert Simpson said: “I had the Kinks, and Tired of Waiting For You. I was 14 then and was starstruck by them. I got millions of albums and singles after that, with bands like Hawkwind and Pink Floyd. I still love music now – I’ve been listening to Twenty One Pilots a lot lately.”
