Lodge honours our fallen war heroes

Memorial event

- Douglas Dickie

Members of a Cambuslang lodge have paid tribute to those who fought and died for their country.

Orange institution District 40 unveiled their new memorial garden at a special event on September 9.

Around 50 people attended to get a look at the garden, which sits at the back of the Orange halls on Tabernacle Lane.

Amongst them were representatives from Poppy Scotland, Erskine, Soldiers off the Streets and the Cambuslang branch of the British Legion.

Big-hearted members at the lodge dug deep to raise more than £300 which was split between the four groups.

The event was organised by Graham Pearson, Arthur Tran and David Crawford.

Graham, who also did the artwork for the garden, said: “We were outside the hall one day and just thought it was a good wee bit of land to do something.

“The idea of the remembrance garden came up and we decided to honour our servicemen and women who had fought in the wars.”

Local businesses also helped out with the event, which included music and a raffle.

Cambuslang Morrisons and Farmfoods made donations, as did the Tesco store on Dalmarnock Road.

Tunnocks even donated biscuits and cakes for the event, while local DJ Alistair Blue provided music.

The district will now make it an annual event to raise money for ex-service charities. Graham said: “It was a great day. “It was the first one we had done but we’re already looking toward next year and try and involve more people.

“I want to thank the DJ, Alistair Blue, as well as everyone else who helped to make the day such a huge success.”
