Rutherglen Reformer

Cllr Alistair Fulton

-

It has now been over four months since I was elected to represent Cambuslang East on South Lanarkshire Council, along with fellow councillors Walter Brogan and Katy Loudon, and I would like to thank the voters for their trust.

I have been appointed the chair of the planning committee.

As a structural engineer, who has assisted in providing information to be included with planning submissions, I feel a little like poacher turned game keeper (or vise-versa).

It has been reported in the Reformer that developers are proposing further house building in Cambuslang East.

This proposal is included in the council’s Main issues Report which is part of the ongoing updating of the Local Development Plan.

There are other proposals in other council wards and I would recommend that this report is read and people can have the opportunity to comment on these proposals.

The report can be found in the following link - http:// www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/info/200145/planning_and_building_standards/39/development_plans/2

At the general election in June we had a change of MP with the SNP’s Margaret Ferrier losing the seat to the Labour Party’s Gerard Killen.

It was a disappointing result for the SNP as we lost a MP who helped save steel jobs and campaigned to keep Cambuslang Job Centre open and was outspoken against the banks leaving Cambuslang.

Whilst we do not agree on a number of policies I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gerard on his election and wish him well as the constituency MP.

In June I went along to the ‘Great Get Together’held in East Kilbride to remember the life of Jo Cox, the Labour MP who was brutally murdered during the European referendum in 2016.

This was part of an UK event organized to allow councillors of all parties within the council to have a non-partisan get together and to remember the words of Jo Cox that:“We are far more united and have far more in common that which divides us.”
