Student earns Scotland call up

-

A talented young Cambuslang footballer will represent her country against the Auld Enemy after earning a call-up to the Scotland student team.

Chloe Docherty, 21, of MacArthur Wynd, plays for Glasgow Girls in the Scottish Women’s Premier League and studies at the University of the West of Scotland.

Now Chloe, who has loved football since she was a girl, is to play in the 2018 Home Nations Championship taking part in home and away matches against England and Wales.

Chloe earned a spot in the squad after impressing coaches during trials at Heriot Watt University.

She said: “I’m delighted. I didn’t think I was going to get in because there were so many girls at the trials.

“After the trial I was constantly checking my email to see if I’d been picked – and eventually it arrived.

“There’s a few meetings then I’ll be playing England home and away and Wales home and away, so it should be a great experience.”

Chloe took her love of football from her dad, Alan. She said: “I’ve been playing since I was six. My dad was always taking me to games and I loved it.

“As soon as I could I was playing at school or with local teams.”

Chloe has been playing for Glasgow Girls for three and a half years and mainly is picked as a left-back.

However she can play all over the pitch and was used at the trials as a striker.

Now she is aiming to get ready for the new club season.

Chloe said: “At the moment I’m just trying to get into shape for the next season and hopefully help get the club promoted.”

She is currently studying sports coaching and development at the University of the West of Scotland.

National team coach Grant Scott praised the quality of the players selected.

He said:” ‘There was a really good standard at the trials and it’s great to have a number of returning players from the successful Home Nations team earlier in the year.

“I am further delighted to include players from a number of academic institutions as well. The staff team are looking forward to building a strong team mentality with the new group of players.” The Home Nations fixtures start in April.
