Rail misery for bargain hunters
Train chaos on busy shopping day
Rutherglen and Cambuslang shoppers looking for a postChristmas bargain faced a nightmare on the railway lines last week.
ScotRail services through Rutherglen and Cambuslang were massively disrupted on Wednesday, December 27 - one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
The situation was caused by a fault with the signalling system at Rutherglen, created by the cold weather freezing some of the points. Rail temperatures were as low as -14C.
Although the problem was fixed by mid morning various trains and crews were left out of position, leading to further delays and cancellations up until 3pm.
Tickets were accepted on certain First Bus routes due to the problems, while services between Glasgow Central high level and Newton via King’s Park were not affected.
If any passenger was delayed for over 30 minutes, then Scotrail advise that you keep hold of your ticket, and visit ScotRail.co.uk/delay-repay for information on a refund.
A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said: “Due to points failures caused by very low temperatures, a number of services between Glasgow Central low level and Motherwell were disrupted.
“We know how frustrating this is for our customers, and we apologise for the impact this had on their day.
“Customers delayed by 30 minutes or more are entitled to compensation, and can claim this by visiting our website.”
