Icy streets need more grit according to locals
Mixed reviews for council’s roads workers
Snow has been falling all around us this month and Scotland’s white Christmas eventually came – a day late.
Temperatures plummeted as those living in Rutherglen and the surrounding areas woke up to a sprinkling of Boxing Day frost.
Council workers were deployed to tackle the tricky conditions and residents had mixed feelings on how well the local authority had coped when dealing with the winter weather.
Robert Munn, 80, was pleased with South Lanarkshire Council’s response.
He said: “I stay in Burnside and they have gritted the streets so I have no complaints.”
Phyllis McInally, 75, also agreed. She added: “I’m quite happy because I used to stay in Robroyston. I moved to Burnside five years ago and South Lanarkshire have a quicker response.
“This is the first day I’ve been out and it was all gritted and driving was fine.”
Natasha White, 40, however, was “disappointed” and said: “I saw council workers gritting Duke’s Road but that’s the first I’ve seen of them. It’s been treacherous.
“We stay on Springfield Park Road and there used to be a grit bin but there’s not anymore. We have to buy it and put it down ourselves.”
Castlemilk’s Bobby Lennox, 76, slammed Glasgow City Council. The Carmunnock Road local said: “It’s pretty messy, it’s not been swept for years. There’s cans and papers lying about, there’s been a light out for four weeks. It’s never gritted and it’s dangerous.”
