New class to get kids fighting fit

-

A new children’s fitness class launches next week in Cambuslang.

Boxercise for 5-12 year olds will start in the community wing of Newton Farm Primary on Thursday, January 11.

A new initiative by personal trainer Tracy Chambers, the class will teach the fundamentals of boxing without physical contact.

Tracy said: “There is no sparring or contact between participants. Only focus pads are hit.

“We work on such aspects as footwork, pad work and the punches and have various fun games that develop these so while learning boxing they also further develop motor skills.”

Children are given bronze, silver and gold awards to track their progress through the sport.

Kids who sign up for the sessions starting next week will be taken through a 10-week programme designed to help them attain the bronze award.

“The awards scheme is a progressive programme taking children from basic through to more advanced skills,” Tracy said.

“The awards progress from bronze to gold and the bronze award can be taught from key stage one, age five and up.

“The awards system allows the young person to track progress and work towards a goal and put it all down in their log book provided by us.

“Having a clear sense of where they are going and how they must get there allows them to really keep on improving to make sure they reach that level.

“Kids love challenges and we make their journey very fun but they also learn a lot and, as long as attendance has been met and instructions have been followed, gaining the award will not be a problem.”

Parents can sign their children up to the 10-week programme by calling Tracy on 07913 256007.
