Charity call for unwanted Xmas gifts

- Douglas Dickie

Rutherglen-based charities are calling on residents to donate unwanted Christmas gifts.

Staff and volunteers at Rutherglen PDSA shop are urging animal lovers to have a clear-out to help sick and injured pets in the local area.

Items needed include CDs, DVDs, books and toys as well as mens and ladies clothes, shoes and accessories and unwanted Christmas gifts.

Donations can be taken to the shop at 50 Rutherglen Main Street from Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 5pm.

Shop manager, Alex Blair, said: “Is your wardrobe bulging with unworn clothes or your shelves full of books you never read? Why not have a clear-out this weekend and donate your unwanted items to PDSA? As well as de-cluttering your home, you’ll be helping raise money for the pets of local people in need.

“We’re appealing for all types of items, especially books, CDs, DVDs and videos, which are popular with our customers. We also need home furnishings such as vases, pictures and ornaments, as well as good quality men’s, ladies and children’s clothes. All funds raised will help local sick and injured pets.”

You can also contact the shop on 0141 613 2684.

The Barnardo’s store at 185 Main Street is also on the lookout for unwanted gifts to help raise money and provide vital support for children in community-based services across the country.

Barnardo’s Scotland’s director, Martin Crewe, said: “When you get a present that is unsuitable for you, or that you don’t like, it can be awkward as you may not know what to do with it.

“Instead of leaving them in the back of a cupboard, re-gifting or even throwing them away, why not donate these presents to Barnardo’s Scotland stores, as you really can make a difference to vulnerable children who need our support across Scotland.”
