Top picks for Lanarkshir­e tots revealed

Jack and Olivia have topped the annual charts for the most popular baby names in South Lanarkshir­e.

They managed to knock Oliver and Emily off their perches this year. A total of 32 boys were named Jack in South Lanarkshir­e during 2017, and 38 girls were called Olivia.

And the popularity of the names was also mirrored across the country.

Alan Ferrier, head of demographi­c statistics at the National Records of Scotland, said: “Figures published by the National Records of Scotland show that in 2017, Jack and Olivia were once again the most popular baby names in Scotland. They also topped the list in 2016 and Jack has been the most popular boy’s name in Scotland for the last ten consecutiv­e years.”

The three most popular names for boys in South Lanarkshir­e were Jack, Lewis and Oliver.

Jack climbed up from fourth last year, Lewis broke straight into the top ten and Oliver dropped down from first place in 2016.

And the three most popular names for girls were Olivia, Emily and Sophie. Olivia climbed one spot from last year, Emily dropped from number one in 2016 and Sophie stayed in third place.

In neighbouri­ng Glasgow the top three names for boys were Muhammad, Jack and Oliver.

The three most popular names for girls in Glasgow were Olivia, Emily and Isla.

The top 10 names for boys in South Lanarkshir­e were Jack (32); Lewis (26); Oliver (26); James (24); Noah (24); Aaron (23); Harris (23); Matthew (23); Logan (21); Adam (20) and Alexander (20).

And the top names for girls were (Olivia (38); Emily (31); Sophie (29); Jessica (28); Isla (23); Charlotte (22); Lucy (22); Harper (21); Sophia (20) and Amelia (19).
