Jordy hailed as champion

-

Cambuslang’s Jordan McCorry was crowned the superfeatherweight champion of Scotland on an evening which involved a scrappy fight and fans clashing outside the ring.

The 26 year old from Drumsagard edged out Drumchapel fighter Jamie McGuire 98-93 on points in the 10-round bout at the Paisley Lagoon Centre on July 1.

Jordan, a plumber by trade, had to have 16 stitches to a cut above his eye after taking a blow to the head in the third round.

He was also warned for leading with his head.

In the sixth, McGuire fell through the ropes into the crowd, leading to a warning for both fighters and sparking clashes between two sets of supporters.

Jordan said it was the most intense fight he had been involved in but he knew he had done enough to win.

He said:“There was a bit of a divide and that’s probably why fans were fighting but when you are in the ring you are focussed.

“We were both in trouble for leading with our head. The ref said I had hit a low blow but that was only because he was holding on all the time.

“I tried to push him off and as I did he fell out the ring and, with all his fans there, it started a bit of a riot in the sixth and that’s when they were all told to calm down.”

The opening rounds started off at a frantic pace and McGuire threw everything at Jordan.

The pattern continued and a strong McGuire shot dropped the Cambuslang man and sent his fans into raptures.

Jordan dusted himself off and controlled the bout until the end to be crowned champion before running towards rival fans to celebrate.
