Successful year for both towns
R’glen and Cambuslang stars shine
• Scotland rugby internationals Jonny Gray and Duncan Weir returned to Cambuslang RFC to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the mini section.
•Funding was approved for floodlights to be erected at Kirkhill Lawn Tennis Club.
•Caitlin Connor, 14, claimed the Scottish Speed Climbing Championship crown.
• Rutherglen racing driver Stevan McAleer celebrated picking up a championship as team owner five years after winning the same title as a driver in New York State.
•Cathkin High School’s Drew Pollock beat 1,600 pupils and staff to win the Lanarkshire Schools 6K Road Race.
October
•Mark Kelsey wrote his name into the Rutherglen Bowling Club history books by becoming the first ever bowler to go unbeaten and win all five of the competitions he qualified for.
•Callum Waugh, Euan Arbuckle and Dean Farmer from Cathkin High School won the South Lanarkshire Team Golf Championship.
•Juniors at Rutherglen Lawn Tennis Club netted five league championships between them.
•Cambuslang lad Zach Sharpe, 10, earned a contract with Hamilton Accies.
•Craig Palmer returned to Glencairn after overcoming a life-threatening accident at work to captain the team to an 11-0 win over Glentanar - equalling a club record.
November
•O’Neils boxer Daniel McMurray, 15, won the Scottish title in a 75kg bout for a third time.
• Celtic FC and Trinity High pupil Chloe Warrington, 15, was capped for her country at under 17 level.
•Rutherglen LTC’s Jonny Wilcox was named best Scotland and British coach.
•Ian Mirfin, from Cambuslang, was recognised for committing over half his life to helping athletes with a disability after being named the Scottish Disability Coach of the Year.
•Castlemilk boxer Ross Murray’s unbeaten record came to an end in a fight for the BDO European title belt.
•Cambuslang teen Ben Findlay overcame a damaged shoulder to achieve second place in his debut at the world kickboxing championships.

•Rutherglen boxer Vicky Glover and Cambuslang Harriers’ Grant Sheldon were selected to represent Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
•Rutherglen Glencairn youth coach John McLeod died age 67.
•Carol Downes became the first female captain in Kirkhill Golf Club’s 107-year history.
