Rutherglen Reformer

Club of the week

-

This week’s Reformer Club of the Week is Cambuslang Colts Football Club.

At just two months old the team has grown dramatically to nine youth sides.

They are in the process of kitting out the seven new teams who are all set to be involved in leagues around Glasgow and the West this year .

Young coaches in their teens have also been handed the chance to learn their trade at Colts to develop young stars of the future as well as their own skills.

And talking of helping others, the club collected over 50 bags and two large boxes of supplies for a local food bank during a recent festive themed training session.

Club chairman Daniel Griffin, 22, moved from one local club to start up the Colts recently and he and his volunteers have done a sterling job in getting the teams up and running.

We caught up with the man behind the plans to find out where they are in their development process.

My coaches are the best I could have. They work so hard and are committed to the club.

We have two for each team but they all try and help each other out when possible.

We like to give young coaches a chance in the club and make a career in coaching for them. Some of our coaches are doing sports leadership programmes, and that’s what they love doing. All teams train at the Toryglen Regional Sports Centre on a Tuesday and Wednesday from 6pm to 10pm.

Eight teams play on a Sunday in the Glasgow and District Youth Football League and the 2001s play in the Paisley Johnstone and District YFL on Saturdays. We struggle to get sponsorship for all age groups but we try our best to give all the players the best of team wear. We try to make them feel the part of a team and build their confidence. We like to help out a lot for the community by helping food banks. Also we have lots of coaches who are great role models for the players to lead by example in life. We are starting a community class on a Monday night at Toryglen for all to come and give them something to do at night if that’s to play games or to help coach. Most of our team’s seasons don’t start until February. Our 2001s are in the quarter-finals of the League Cup against EK Blues in January 2018 and we are all really excited for it. Commitment, hard work and listening, players turning up wanting to be there and wanting to be the best. We make sure we make players feel wanted and give them confidence to do their very best. We play and train at the best facility in Glasgow, Toryglen. We have great coaches, who have time for all players, we offer extra training and we try our very best to make it fun.
