Snowstrikes

-

South Lanarkshire Council bosses say staff have been working “tirelessly” after snow struck in Rutherglen and Cambuslang on Monday night.

Many residents had complained about an apparent lack of gritting on some streets, but council chiefs say priority routes were treated.

South Lanarkshire Council has defended its response to the snow that arrived on Monday night.

Despite residents complaining about a lack of treatment on roads, the local authority said 23 gritters worked through the night across the region.

Drivers have been reminded that snow can still fall on gritted roads.

South Lanarkshire Council head of roads Gordon Mackay said the council focuses gritting efforts on A and B class routes, distributor routes and a carriageway route to schools, police stations, fire stations and ambulance depots.

He added: “Although the conditions have been challenging, our teams have worked tirelessly to keep roads and pavements gritted; however, snow was still falling in many areas during the morning peak period and further showers and heavier spells of snow and hail are expected through the day which will lead to snow and slush accumulating on roads and pavements.

“It is not possible to treat all of the roads and footways which everyone might wish or as soon as they may wish.”

An amber weather warning was put in place until 8am today, Wednesday, and a yellow warning for snow remains in force until 9am tomorrow.

A yellow warning for wind is in place from 9pm, tonight until 1pm on Thursday.
