Victims suffer smoke inhalation

Two people had to be taken to hospital after a blaze in Rutherglen on Saturday.

The fire, which affected the top floor and rooftop of a twostorey property on Hamilton Road, started around 7pm, with firefighte­rs spending over an hour trying to put it out.

A man and a woman were both taken to Hairmyres Hospital as a result of suffering moderate smoke inhalation, although the move was a precaution­ary one.

A spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.26pm on Saturday, January 13, to reports of a house fire at Hamilton Road, Rutherglen.

“Operations control mobilised four appliances to the scene, where firefighte­rs wearing breathing apparatus extinguish­ed the fire.

“Two casualties suffering from smoke inhalation were transferre­d into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and taken to hospital for further treatment.

“Crews left the scene at 9.57pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Firefighte­rs spent time after the incident giving home safety advice .

Robert Deans, station manager at Clydesmill, said: “We are always keen to engage with all members of the public.

“Usually people are more responsive to this after seeing an incident but informatio­n is there for everyone and we would rather they found out in advance of something happening, rather than afterwards.”

Firefighte­rs also had to deal with a bus that went on fire on Westburn Road on Monday morning.

The vehicle, believed to be a private hire, had no-one inside it when the fire started, but the incident caused the road to be closed in both directions.

A spokesman added: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 8.02am on Monday, January 15 to reports of a bus fire on Westburn Road, Cambuslang.

“Operations control immediatel­y mobilised two fire appliances to the scene, where firefighte­rs wearing breathing apparatus extinguish­ed the fire.

“Crews left the scene at 8.40am after ensuring that the area was made safe.”
