Staff praised for good care

Support service assessed by inspectors

- Douglas Dickie

Staff at a support service for adults with learning difficulties have been graded at the highest level possible by the Care Inspectorate.

Richmond Fellowship Scotland run a housing support service branch for residents in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, as well as a branch in East Kilbride.

The two branches, which operate out of the Clydesmill Industrial Estate, aim to “support people in developing independent living skills based on person-centred principles” so they can participate in the community.

The result of an inspection which took place on November 9 was published last week, with staff praised for their “extremely respectful and positive” ethos.

The inspectors graded the quality of staffing six (excellent).

Quality of care and support was graded five (very good) with no other criteria being assessed on that visit.

The service currently supports around 60 people in Rutherglen, Cambuslang and East Kilbride.

Although not able to verbally communicate with many of the service users, inspectors observed how they interacted with staff.

They concluded that service users “felt comfortable communicating and engaging with staff.”

Relatives of service users also praised the staff, with one saying: “The current team of carers are excellent and have my relatives needs, wellbeing and happiness at the root of all they do.”

The inspectors concluded: “We found that the service was performing to a very good standard for quality of care and support.

“We saw that people who used the service were very much at the heart of it, and that consultation and participation opportunities were supported and promoted.

“The quality of staffing was excellent and staff had autonomy and responsibility with support from senior staff and managers, in order to fulfil their roles.”

No recommendations were made for the service.
