It’s not pie in the sky at popular butcher
Top Scottish award
A Cambuslang butchers are celebrating after they were judged to have sold the best chicken pies in Scotland.
Hugh Black and Sons scooped the coveted diamond award in the Scottish Craft Butchers Savoury Pastry Products Awards 2018 for their chicken and smoked ham hough pies.
And the Main Street butchers chain has also secured two gold awards for their scotch pies and steak and haggis pies, as well as lifting silver awards for their bridies, handheld steak pies and chicken madras curry pies.
They also bagged a gold award at the World Scotch Pie Championships for one of the best apple tarts and silver for their chicken madras pie.
Company director Craig Black said achieving their awards, including their first diamond prize, was testament to the making of a good product.
When asked what made a great pie, Craig said: “It has to be wholesome, flavoursome, nice in quality and value for money.
“We are delighted with the diamond award.
“We do believe it was a good, good product and to get that accolade from our federation just pushes us on a bit further.”
The popular Cambuslang butcher, which opened in 2002, is run by manager Christopher Reid and workers Debbie and Kerry Miller.
They oversee the delivery from the Hugh Black and Sons factory which is managed by product development chief Willie Kemp.
Willie, who devised the award winning pies, added: “Cambuslang is part of 12 shops that we have.
“Craig’s brother Hugh buys all the beef from the markets so we really take it from the start of its journey to the end of its journey.
“I create a sauce and meat combination that I know will work and then we taste test it with staff and customers.”
