Legends sign up for charity match
Big names set to pull on boots for St Andrew’s Hospice
Scottish football legends Graeme Souness and Neil Lennon have signed up for a fundraising football match in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice.
The Old Firm heroes will join a host of other stars for the charity game which will kick off at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium on June 2.
The big match is part of a quest by our sister title, the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser, to raise £50,000 for the much-loved Lanarkshire hospice which offers end-of-life care for people from all over the region including Rutherglen and Cambuslang.
Former Scotland captain Souness said he wants to raise “an enormous amount of money” for the hospice after becoming aware of its “incredible work” when the wife of his close friend received end-of-life care there 18 months ago.
Hibernian manager Lennon was only too happy to answer the call of his fellow pundit and the pair recently visited the region to promote the launch.
Big-name backing for the footballing fundraiser, organised by editor Graham Miller, has also been given by Souness’ managerial successors at Rangers, with Walter Smith and new Scotland boss Alex McLeish also onside.
Mr Souness said: “The hospice is a wonderful facility and does an incredible job under very difficult and emotional circumstances. The objective now is to make the day a huge success and raise an enormous amount of money for the hospice.”
The hospice’s Capital Appeal director Karen McFadyen is sure the charity match will hit the target for the hospice.
She said: “It promises to be a memorable event and to have the likes of Graeme Souness and Neil Lennon involved is fantastic.”
Details on how to purchase tickets for the game are due to be published soon.
