Blooming marvellous
All hands on deck for clean-up
A community clean-up at the weekend has given Halfway a magnificent makeover.
Halfway Community Council co-ordinated the area’s first ever community clean, which involved local residents, young Cambuslang Red Star footballers and Cambuslang East councillors Katy Loudon and Alistair Fulton.
The hard-working group cleared the streets of rubbish for several hours on Saturday and filled 50 bin bags.
They also supported the Keep Scotland Beautiful charity with their roadside kerb campaign.
Tidying up the area was done in preparation for the Halfway In Bloom event which followed the next day.
Colourful flower boxes, which were sponsored by generous local businesses and individuals, were introduced to Main Street on Sunday morning.
Community council members moved 13 large flower boxes from the Eva Burrow centre and Halfway allotments to the main central reservation areas.
Halfway community councillors and Alan McGrotty, from the Eva Burrow centre, then installed the boxes along the road for all to enjoy this summer.
Cambuslang firefighters, under the watch of Stephen McGurk, showed their support for the community project by arriving to water the flower boxes. Halfway residents are delighted with how the area has been spruced up and heaped praise on everyone involved via the community council’s Facebook page.
Karen McFarlane wrote: “Thank you so much. Saw you on my walk to Blantyre this morning and felt rather ashamed that I was not participating.
“Surprised by the amount of red bags piled up by the precinct. Well done and please let me know how to get involved in future.”
Marion Park commented: “The flowers on the Main Street look great.”
Margaret Ann Clark wrote: “What a difference it has made. All the glass was swept up and place looks tidy – well done.”
