Janice inspired to help out hospice

Impressed by care

- Jonathan Geddes

A Cambuslang woman has been inspired to help out a hospital after they nursed her husband back to health following a stroke.

Janice Black, 64, decided to take up volunteering at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank due to the treatment husband Billy, 70, received there.

Billy underwent a triple heart bypass after a genetic condition was discovered, and he suffered a stroke afterwards, requiring him to spend weeks recovering.

Janice was impressed by his care, and the couple have donated laptops and DAB Digital radios, worth £600, to delighted staff for patient use, as well as a cheque for £100.

“My husband’s illness came out of the blue and was later confirmed as being genetic.

“He was a marathon runner and such a fit guy, so it was a real blow to us when we were told he was going to need heart surgery.

“We were further shocked to learn that he’d suffered a stroke requiring an extended stay in ITU and HDU at the Golden Jubilee then a further two weeks in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. “The attention given to both Billy and myself was unbelievable and thankfully Billy is well on the road to recovery.”

As well as Janice’s volunteering, Billy is aiming to raise funds by taking part in local Men’s Shed activities.

Janice added: “I think if Billy had been anywhere else, he probably would not have survived but something about being here told me he was going to pull through.”

Golden Jubilee nurse director Anne Marie Cavanagh said: “We are delighted Billy is making a good recovery and we are extremely grateful to the couple for their generous donations.

“Janice will also be a welcome addition to our fantastic volunteer team who do an amazing job in the hospital.”
